Fabric Specification Explained

3 Meter vs 3.5 Meter Mesh Fabric What "meters per kg" actually means — and how it decides weight, density, cost, and the right pick for your product.

Heavier · Denser
3 m/kg
More body, firmer hand
VS
Lighter · Economical
3.5 m/kg
Thinner, lower cost/meter

Ask a mesh fabric supplier for a rate and the first thing they'll ask back is: "3 meter or 3.5 meter quality?"

If you're new to sourcing lining and lamination fabric, that question can be confusing — most other materials are quoted in GSM or by the meter. Here's exactly what the number means, why the trade uses it, and how to pick the right one for shoes, bags, or lamination.

01What "Meters Per Kg" Actually Means

Meters per kilogram is simply how many running meters of fabric you get out of one kilogram of material. Because the fabric is sold by weight, this single number tells you how light or heavy — and therefore how dense — the fabric is.

The logic in one line
1 kg → 3.0 meters  =  heavier, more grams packed into each meter
1 kg → 3.5 meters  =  lighter, fewer grams stretched across more length

So the counter-intuitive part is this: the higher the meters-per-kg number, the lighter the fabric. A 3.5 m/kg quality is thinner than a 3 m/kg quality, because the same kilo is being spread over more length.

02Side by Side

The same kilogram, two different qualities.

Attribute 3 m/kg 3.5 m/kg
Weight per meter Heavier Lighter
Density / hand Firmer, more body Softer, thinner
Length per kg 3.0 meters 3.5 meters
Cost per meter Higher Lower
Best for Structure-critical uses Cost-critical uses

Both qualities are the same 100% polyester circular knitted mesh in the same solid dyed shades — black, navy blue, and grey. The only variable is how much material sits in each meter.

03Which One Should You Buy?

Match the quality to what your product actually needs.

Choose 3 m/kg when
Heavier · Denser
3 m/kg
  • The laminate or lining needs body and structure
  • The fabric is a load-bearing backing
  • A firmer, more premium hand-feel matters
  • Shoe uppers & structured bag panels
Choose 3.5 m/kg when
Lighter · Economical
3.5 m/kg
  • Cost per meter is the priority
  • A light, thin lining is enough
  • High-volume, price-sensitive runs
  • Inner linings, pouches & light backing
Quick decision: if your product needs the fabric to hold shape, go 3 m/kg. If it just needs a clean, breathable lining at the best price, go 3.5 m/kg.

04How This Affects Your Costing

Because the material is priced per kilogram — for example ₹130/kg + 5% GST — the meters-per-kg number directly changes your cost per meter:

  • At 3 m/kg, one kilo gives you 3 meters — so your cost is spread over less length.
  • At 3.5 m/kg, that same kilo gives you 3.5 meters — so your per-meter cost drops.
  • If you buy by weight but sell finished goods by area or piece, always convert to per-meter before comparing quotes.

This is why two suppliers quoting the "same" rate per kg can still land you at different effective costs — the quality (m/kg) behind that rate is what really decides value.
